Nissan is currently testing something called the Nissan Signal Shield, which is a compartment built into the armrest of a vehicle for drivers to put their phones in.  The compartment blocks all outgoing and incoming signals, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular, which means drivers won’t be getting calls, texts or anything else on their phones while they drive, which will hopefully cut down on texting and driving.  So far the Nissan Signal Shield is currently being tested in the Nissan Juke, but if the prototype is successful it could wind up in all cars some day.

A new poll finds that two-thirds of Americans believe society has become noisier, with almost half of people saying they prefer quiet or very quiet activities.  A quarter of those polled say they've stopped going to places they thought were too noisy, with bars clubs and concerts rated the “top noisiest” places.  1% of people say they are worried they may have harmed their hearing because of past exposure to loud leisure settings, while 51% are worried about what future exposure might do.

A researcher out of Oxford University suggests that simply eating your cereal out of a square-shaped bowl could go a long way towards dropping those extra pounds.  According to the research, folks who eat out of a square bowl instead of a round one will be tricked into thinkin they are more nourished because it increases the brain’s perception of nutrition.  The study also suggests that standing while eating can also make people feel like what they’re eating is more nutritious.

Plenty of people can’t stop talking about politics, even at work. A new survey released by the American Psychological Association shows that more than half of Americans (54%) admit to discussing politics since the election. But all that talk about the government isn’t making our coworkers happy.  According to the survey:

  • 31% have witnessed a fight about politics in the office
  • 15% have gotten into a dispute themselves over the subject
  • 40% of workers say the political talk has led to negative outcomes like being less productive, difficulty getting work done, having a negative view of colleagues, and more workplace hostility.

And more than a quarter of people surveyed (26%) say they feel tense or stressed out because of it.

When Priscilla Samey didn’t have a date to her senior prom, she got creative and brought a one-of-a-kind date: her acceptance letter from Harvard. The high school senior proved she didn’t need a man, while throwing a little shade at the guys missing out on her.  “Couldn’t find a man to accept me for prom so I took a college that did #Harvard2021 #prom2k17,” she posted on Twitter. Her tweet has more than 126,000 likes and over 29,000 retweets.  And those high school guys are really missing out because not only did she get accepted into Harvard, she got a full ride! And she was also accepted to Yale, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Columbia, and Brown.  “I took a date that was pretty low maintenance, so I didn’t have to pay for his dinner,” Samey jokes, adding that her classmates were cool about her paper date. She says she didn’t get any negative feedback and everyone thought it was funny.
