Lots of Parents Hate Their Kids Names

Picking a name for your child is never easy, especially since most children will have to live with that moniker for the rest of their lives. While many parents take a long time to decide on a name, it doesn’t mean they won’t have regrets in the end, and it seems a lot of moms and dads do.

A new survey finds that one in seven parents feel they made a “terrible mistake” with their kid’s name, with 28% actually admitting to their kid they regret the name, and another 10% of kids telling their parents they don’t like their name either.

Many parents insist they loved their kid's name at the time they gave it to them, but their opinions went on to change. As for what prompted them to eventually despise the name, 20% say it’s because the name eventually became too popular, while 10% started to hate it when a celebrity chose it for their baby.

Other reasons parents regret their kid’s name include:

  • I was pressured into choosing a name by my partner/ family member
  • I’ve just gone off it
  • I no longer think it fits them
  • My friend chose the same name for their baby
  • It’s too unusual
  • It’s difficult to spell
  • Someone with the same name became famous
  • It sounds like something rude or awkward when you put it with their middle name/ surname

  • And celebrities certainly play a big role in moms and dads getting put off by a name. In fact, one third of parents say they dislike a name if it’s shared by someone famous withDonaldthe most disliked name for that reason.

According to a new, slightly creepy study, most men seem to want a partner who is basically a lot like their mom. The research from eHarmony finds that 64% of men are actually in a relationship with someone who shares many personality traits with their mother, and apparently, that’s totally normal from an evolutionary, psychological point of view.

“It’s well known that we tend to migrate towards people who share similar traits with us and, to varying degrees, we seek to recreate aspects of our original relationships with our parents,” explains Rachael Lloyd, relationship expert at eHarmony. “With moms as our primary caregivers in life, it’s no surprise men are attracted to women who possess similar values.”

So guys tend to like girls with traits their mom has, including tolerance, views on monogamy, and agreeableness. But it doesn’t just stop at personality traits. Previous research has found that some men are attracted to partners who share physical traits with their mothers - as in they look like their moms. Urszula Marcinkowska, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Turku, explains that since mamas are our earliest and closest contact, she becomes the “visual template” men seek out. And that may make sense from an evolutionary standpoint, but it would still be creepy to have a girlfriend that looked a whole lot like dear old mom.

There are lots of adulting responsibilities that we’d rather not deal with and one of the biggest is handling our personal finances. But as we get older, we need to be prepared and understand what’s going on with our money and knowing these things about our finances while we’re in our 30s can help.

  • Your current net worth- This means knowing both your assets and liabilities, which is what you own and what you owe. Don’t let your debt or your savings account balance be a mystery to you.
  • The importance of investing- By the time you’re in your mid-thirties, if you haven’t already started, it’s time to invest in your 401k, Roth, traditional IRA or something else for your future. Even if it’s just $100 a month, the sooner you get started the better shape you’ll be in later on.
  • How much you need for retirement- You need to know how much you need so you know if you’re on track with your savings. There are online retirement calculators that can help you figure it out and meeting with a financial planner can too.
  • What your credit score is- It’s basically a number assigned to you by lenders to show how risky it is to lend to you and your credit score can affect your financial health, buying options and your chances of getting everything from a small loan to a mortgage.
  • How to budget- Being able to create and stick to a realistic budget makes financial planning so much easier. As your life situation changes, your budget can too and mastering it now will make it easier when you’re saving for bigger goals later on.
  • What an emergency fund is-Researchshows that more than half (57%) of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings, so they’re totally unprepared for unexpected events. That’s why you need an emergency fund - a cushion of money equal to about three to six months of living expenses.
  • How compound interest works- It’s basically free money and here’s how it works, according to financial plannerLauren Zangardi Haynes. “As your invested assets earn dividends and interest and you reinvest those dividends and interest payments, then your earnings will start to make money for you,” she explains. Thanks to compound interest, you may be “better off starting earlier and saving a smaller amount of money on a regular basis versus starting later and saving more money.”
